the solution you are proposing in

is most probably sensible and I'd happily apply it future revisions.
However, as Niels wrote below the changes are conflicting with the
freeze policy.  As far as I understand the clean target does not work
with your patch.  Do you see a chance to skip the getmachine call in the
clean target which should be sufficient to work around the problem?
