I'm thinking it might make sense to ditch the non-reentrant version of this library. I doubt there would be any measurable performance loss. Can you imagine any objections?
We would need to make sure all rdepends can build against the reentrant version and I would wait at least one release cycle with both versions to give enough time for the transition. On the other hand, as long as upstream is providing both version and it's no overhead to provide both in Debian, I would leave it as it is.
