I agree with you that we should switch from LAM to MPICH2 in mpi-defaults now. In fact, bug #555653 requesting this change was marked confirmed and pending over a year ago! This message is reaching all the listed maintainers of mpi-defaults. I'd suggest one of you go ahead and make the upload!
