I figured out the reason it didn't build on i386 was the multiarch paths were hard coded in d/rules. I fixed that and tested it locally. I've pushed the fix to salsa, though I haven't seen the results yet. (There was some missing dependencies in the python autopkgtest that I also fixed in an earlier commit)
