Good idea .. in fact I wonder why that isn't the default behaviour (the syslog entry on CAD). Surely it's a negligible overhead, and can only help - or at worst would be uninteresting ? It certainly is the default on some of the commercial Unixen that I administer (on some flavours I can think of there is an optional "message" argument to the shutdown command, that is logged as a "reason:" field of the syslog entry).
