Fakeroot works for me. I just built a package with it as a test.
The system is:
Sun Ultra 5
running
fakeroot 0.0-17.1
libc6 2.0.105-1.2
libstdc++2.9 2.91.60-1
There is a bug in the UltraSparc kernel that breaks fakeroot and
postgresql, but David Miller was kind enough to fix this an post a
patch to the sparclinux mailing list.
