If it's trying to open gpmdata, make sure XF86Config uses the correct mouse device. Look for something like:
Section "Mouse" Device "/dev/<some device>" that device should be sunmouse, I suspect it may be set to /dev/mouse, which probably is symlinked to the supposed gpmdata socket.
