Hmm, yes, apparently this is handled directly by pam_motd; if
/etc/update-motd.d exists it runs the scripts there with run-parts to
generate the motd file dynamically. This feature is also in Debian, just
not configured by default.

So the change that was made in login probably breaks this?

That also means that we should probably have handled the disappearance
of the /etc/init.d/motd init script just by shipping a script in
/etc/update-motd.d that outputs the uname, not by using pam_exec.
