I think there is a problem when switching from graphic to text mode. Do
you have any difficulties when switching from xfree to text console and

Good call! I forgot that I had downloaded the testing radeon
framebuffer driver from http://www.botchco.com/alex/radeon/, and after
putting the original radeon_drv.o back into place, the problem went away.
