I don't know if that works, but if i change:
blackbox & wmpid=$!
in my .xinitrc to:
fluxbox & wmpid=$!
X starts up just fine.
attached is the whole XFree86.log from that specific session that gave me the error message. I still can't get blackbox to start and I'd really like to run vmware.

What versions of blackbox and bbkeys are you using? It sounds like a version conflict.
