An ALTERNATIVE is to install vim and then do an :-

        update-alternatives --config vi

and set vim as the editor called.

I did this and am happily able to edit.  hjkl is useful but when you
aren't used to it, it's a nuisance.  Quite why vim wasn't my default
editor is anther matter :-)
