Another question: what and where is the file for the configuration of

In my experience, the most common cause of this symptom is an incorrect
setting for the DNS nameservers in /etc/resolv.conf. One confirming
observation on the DNS being improperly set is if you can ping remote
computers by IP number but not by Name. Mozilla, et. al. use name
resolution via DNS.
If that is set correctly or you cannot ping remote computers even by IP
number, then check your routing...especially the "gateway" entry.
Some more information about your setup would be most helpful. There can
be other causes of this that depends upon just how you are connecting to
the internet (PPP verses a Broadband connection, Direct verses going
through another "router" box, using NAT / IPMasq, etc.). A report of
the results of an "ifconfig" and "route" commands would also be quite
helpful.
