I had that same problem. Instructions from Donald Becker were to check the Sleep mode in the network card. Under high load the card may not respond to PCI requests when this mode is enabled. Download eepro100-diag.c at: ftp://ftp.scyld.com/pub/diag/eepro100-diag.c And use it to check the Sleep mode setting. If the Sleep mode is enabled you can follow the program instructions to disable it.
