Oi pessoal, resolvi voltar a tentar a atualizacao do kernel,
deixando o 2.2.17 em favor do 2.4.9. Logicamente tive problemas e estou
aqui para relata-los e pedir ajuda. Meu sistema é um Debian Sid e apos
instalar uma das imagens disponiveis obtive isto na inicializacao:

Achei a terceira linha um pouco estranha, mas no diretorio dos modulos
encontrei isto:

Nao conheco o esquema de modulos do kernel. Isto acima listado é
suficiente para eu considerar que o kernel foi compilado com suporte a
ext2 via modulo??
Alem disso, o diretorio /boot está assim, onde se pode ver os arquivos
referentes ao initrd:
