Cara eu uso o driver da própria nvidia na minha maquina e a placa é a
mesma que a sua uma nvidia gforce mx 440 com 64MB e o que eu tive que
fazer é mais ou menos o seguinte instalei o kernel-headers 2.6.8 vai no
modo texto e desativa o X se ele estiver habilitado com /etc/init.d/gdm
stop após isso vc roda o driver da nvidia sh Nvidia-linux-x86-'a versão
que vc baixou" se ele instalar sem nenhum problema vá
no /etc/X11//XF86config-4 e mude o nome do driver para nvidia não se
esqueça de comentar Load "dri" e load "GLcore" e se não tiver adicione
Load "glx".
Feito isso vc reativa o gerenciador de login com /etc/init.d/gdm start
Acho que é só isso.
