Caso o deph entre as duas placas seja diferente o X nem sobe... O que pode estar acontecendo no seu caso é uma limitação do driver da ATI, no laboratorio da nossa equipe existe esse mesmo problema, utilzando como duplas uma Radeon 7000 32 mb (AGP) e uma Rage LT PCI ( 4MB) e uma SiS 315 AGP e a mesma RAGE LT... Porem qdo utilizamos uma Matrox PCI (no maximo 8 MB) a coisa funcionou blz, ela esta em 1024x768 limitada pelo monitor (15 pol). Cabe ressaltar que até pouco tempo nao conseguia ativar o xinerama com suas ATIs..
