Yo tengo smail y no me ha pasado nunca. Me temo que tiene que ver con que vuestros sendmail verifican que el dominio del remitente exista en DNS y no acepta direcciones incorrectas. Esto creo que se puede deshabilitar, pero no se como (no uso ni he usado nunca sendmail). Creo que esto por defecto no es verificado en smail. Mi smail se traga la direcci�n que le pongas, aunque si al final no la puede entregar, te devuelve un NDR.
