I uncommented the last line in /etc/netatalk/afpd.conf so it looks like 
this.
- -transall -uamlist uams_clrtxt.so,uams_dhx.so -nosavepasswd

Now login works with cleartext password. That is okay for me. Before I 
got the message that it was going to double encrypt the passwd but it 
wouldn't allow me to log in. 8.5 is the OS. Just had to reload the other 
day as it was 8.6 then.
