I'm not sure what kind of memory it uses, it is a very old machine.  I
checked prices on the internet and you can get 128MB of PC100 SDRAM DIMM for
about the price of a 4MB 30 pin SIMM (which is probably what it needs).  It
just doesn't make sense to pay good money to upgrade a 10 year old machine.
Besides WALMART is supposedly coming out with a $199 computer running
Lindows in the near future.

The ramdisk needs a default value of a little over 4 Megs of "free"
memory to setup.  Since your computer is locking up at this point, you
may be having a memory-shortage problem.  It should work, but I can't
say for sure since, it has been a long time since I installed Debian
with anything less than 64 Megs of RAM.  You might have a defective
memory stick in there...dunno.  Anyway, if possible, try sticking in
some more memory if you can.  You won't regret it....
