What error messages are you getting? (Try looking in
/var/log/XFree86.0.log)

Yes, get X to work first. kdm, gdm, xdm, and the window managers all run
on top of X. The screen information you entered is for X. It would help
if you told us your hardware and your /etc/X11/XF86Config.
