Quite irritating. > FAM - I think it stands for File Alteration Monitor. It is used by lots of applications but in particular Nautilus (also Gnome Commander - but can be turned off). If a file is changed, deleted or created the application is alerted, otherwise the user would have to refresh the window constantly. Certainly a useful function.
