Hi folks,

Sorry to have left out some details. My monitor is a
HP Ultra VGA 1280 and my Intel chipset is 865G.

I have upgraded xfree86 to 4.3.0. Don't see any improvement in display quality though. Now I can select i810 for controller. But even when I select res of 1024x768 and depth of 24 during config, the Xf86Config-4 file shows the highest res supported is 800x600 and the default depth 8.

Any explanation?

Hello Jack,

This looks like it here?

http://www.monitor-drivers.com/drivers/38/38463.htm

And those settings look right for what I remember as configs for 98.
But you say you've had better with XP?

O.K., you must have a misconfig in xserver-xfree86, in that case.
The fact that you record it as a 'default depth' would seem that the O.S. is choosing config instead of your settings.
Just as an experiment, reconfigure xserver again, and allocate a variety of settings, with the highest being 1024/768. There could be a glitch, and providing the variety could free it up.
I just can't understand why config would be less than settings unless the monitor is incapable of translating them, and reversion to default is occurring in order to preserve your monitor. But you say you've had better?

Also, try advanced set-up. You'll have to arrow down to find the selection, but then you'll be able to set your own individual H, V and bit settings, if you are not already doing that.
Regards,

David.
