I believe that's because of a change in KWin that XMMS hasn't catered for (yet). My workaround (thanks to someone on this list) is to run XMMS with the Status Docklet plugin and execute it with the following command: kstart --window "^XMMS" --skippager --skiptaskbar -- xmms -p That then lets me click on the icon in the system tray to hide or show XMMS.
