I am probably coming in the middle of this thread and don't know exactly what's going on (just re-subscribed to the list). But are you trying to get a "shutdown" button in gnome without having to log out and do it via gdm?
Simply make a new launcher that runs 'gksu poweroff'. When you press it, you'll get a dialog box asking for password, then it shutsdown for you.
