I recommend using modconf.  Find the alsa modules (snd-*), then find the 
module for your particular card and insert it.  It should grab pretty well 
everything else you need for basic support (snd, soundcore, etc.) just from 
doing that, though you might have to go back and hunt down a few others for 
things like OSS compatibility and sequencer support, if you need them.  This 
has always worked well for me.
