I have gotten this to work using a couple of efax front-ends, efax-gtk and 
kdeprintfax. Kdeprintfax can be set up called as a printer choice from kde 
applications. However, direct applications such as OpenOffice and others will 
only see the regular printers attached to the system, for example, on a 
parallel port using a known driver such as for Epson or HP.

What is needed is a front end such as one of the above which will come up when 
selecting a fax printer listed under CUPS. An interface might be using a URI. 
How might I set this up?
