Do you in fact have a kernel-image package installed? My memory may be off, but I don't think a kernel-image packge is actually installed default.
If "dpkg -l|grep kernel-image" doesn't show anything, you might want to search for the kernel image that suits your system: "apt-cache search kernel-image|grep ^kernel-image"
