Under debian [gxwk]dm (pick one, dependinh on what you have installed) one of those is automatically started up throughout _ALL_ run-levels except 4,6,0. Putting it in /etc/inittab is a nasty ugly hangover from RedHat which thankfully, debian has dropped.
