If you want to run applications as an other user you can either find the "nolisten tcp" option somewhere under /etc/X11, and use your set DISPLAY / xhost method, or you can use »sux« (su with x) of the package sux (not sure, if it is in stable) instead, or you can cheat and use ssh -x [EMAIL PROTECTED] (you might need to allow your ssh server X11 forwarding).
