I just went out and bought a brand new, fully hardware PCI modem (for $68!), USR 56K V.90 w/ Voice (2976/3298). Unfortunately, it does not seem to get assigned a ttyS* port during the boot process. The Modem HOWTO gives some tips for finding out the essential information, then says without giving specific directions, to use that info with setserial to assign a serial port to the hardware. However I am at a loss as to how to actually do that. Here are the relevant results of what I have tried so far. Any advice, or pointers to more detailed instructions?
In the BIOS, PnP OS is OFF. Using pppconfig and setting the device to any of /dev/ttyS*, then pon, gives "No dial tone" results in plog. Output of wvdialconf are at the bottom of the info below. # dmesg | grep tty # dmesg | grep modem # lspci -vv 0000:02:0b.0 Serial controller: 5610 56K FaxModem 56K FaxModem Model 5610 (rev 01) (prog-if 02 [16550]) Subsystem: U.S. Robotics: Unknown device 0110 Control: I/O+ Mem- BusMaster- SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=medium >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 23 Region 0: I/O ports at 2400 [size=8] Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2 Flags: PMEClk- DSI- D1- D2+ AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0+,D1-,D2+,D3hot+,D3cold+) Status: D0 PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=2 PME- # scanpci pci bus 0x0002 cardnum 0x0b function 0x00: vendor 0x12b9 device 0x1008 5610 56K FaxModem 56K FaxModem Model 5610 # cat /proc/interrupts CPU0 0: 2539085 IO-APIC-edge timer 1: 3128 IO-APIC-edge i8042 7: 2 IO-APIC-edge parport0 8: 4 IO-APIC-edge rtc 9: 0 IO-APIC-level acpi 12: 9797 IO-APIC-edge i8042 14: 8863 IO-APIC-edge ide0 15: 52 IO-APIC-edge ide1 16: 0 IO-APIC-level uhci_hcd 17: 19010 IO-APIC-level Intel 82801DB-ICH4, eth0 18: 0 IO-APIC-level uhci_hcd 19: 0 IO-APIC-level uhci_hcd 23: 0 IO-APIC-level ehci_hcd NMI: 0 LOC: 2539368 ERR: 0 MIS: 0 # cat /proc/ioports 0000-001f : dma1 0020-0021 : pic1 0040-005f : timer 0060-006f : keyboard 0070-0077 : rtc 0080-008f : dma page reg 00a0-00a1 : pic2 00c0-00df : dma2 00f0-00ff : fpu 0170-0177 : ide1 01f0-01f7 : ide0 0376-0376 : ide1 0378-037a : parport0 03c0-03df : vga+ 03f6-03f6 : ide0 03f8-03ff : serial 04d0-04d1 : pnp 00:0a 0778-077a : parport0 0cf8-0cff : PCI conf1 1000-107f : 0000:00:1f.0 1000-105f : pnp 00:0a 1008-100b : ACPI timer 1010-1015 : ACPI CPU throttle 1060-107f : pnp 00:0a 1180-11bf : 0000:00:1f.0 1180-11bf : pnp 00:0a 1800-181f : 0000:00:1d.0 1800-181f : uhci_hcd 1820-183f : 0000:00:1d.1 1820-183f : uhci_hcd 1840-185f : 0000:00:1d.2 1840-185f : uhci_hcd 1860-186f : 0000:00:1f.1 1860-1867 : ide0 1868-186f : ide1 1880-189f : 0000:00:1f.3 18c0-18ff : 0000:00:1f.5 1c00-1cff : 0000:00:1f.5 2000-20ff : 0000:02:02.0 2000-20ff : 8139too 2400-2407 : 0000:02:0b.0 2400-2407 : serial # wvdialconf york Scanning your serial ports for a modem. ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.
