Did you run 'lilo' after that? And please post the contents of your /etc/lilo.conf file.

No, I had not run lilo! Thanks for that.

I just run it and managed to boot the new kernel, although networking (perhaps just DNS) was not working. Still, I can probably sort out what I missed in the kernel and so build another.
