You also need to install x-window-system-core, because kde and gnome
depend on xlibs, but not a complete xserver installation. Try

apt-get install x-window-system-core kde kdm

to install kde, xfree and the kdm login manager. If you need to
reconfigure the xserver at a later time, run

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
