With the same hardware (an IBM Thinkpad R40e) comparing windoze XP performance and the debian/kde3.3 ones it results slower with debian, let's say less reactive to the user...

KDE is quite chunky, especially if you turn all the cute things on (such as semi-transparent, fading menus). You'll also suffer a performance hit if you clog up your RAM with servers and other processes you don't need.


You should also look at your graphics drivers, e.g. you'll get much better performance with X11 configured to use an optimised driver then a generic VESA one.
