I used magicfilterconfig to set up /etc/printcap as follows:

lp|PodLaser|PodLaser:\
        :lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/PodLaser:\
        :sh:pw#80:pl#72:px#1440:mx#0:\
        :if=/etc/magicfilter/hl1250-filter:\
        :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:
PodLaserPS|postscript:\
        :lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/PodLaserPS:\
        :sh:pw#80:pl#72:px#1440:mx#0:\
        :if=/etc/magicfilter/ps600-filter:\
        :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:

but "lpr -P PodLaserPS foo.ps" wouldn't work until I added the printer
through the CUPS web interface too. Now it works.

The danger of simultaneous printing is there but not too high: one
Windows machine also prints to it through Samba (using the Brother
Windows drivers).

Thanks for the advice.
