I mean does it respond when you talk into your mike? I think in audacity, the default is that you don't hear yourself while you're recording but you push some button (sorry don't remember what it's called) and then you do hear. The important thing is if you see the metre responding the it is receiving input. If nothing happens then there's a problem.
