No, but there maybe two things:
1) Do you have the chipset driver installed (compiled into the kernel
or loaded as module)? Look at dmesg output, what your kernel says
about your hardware.
2) You don't have a chipset supported by linux. Yes, this may happen.
You could post the output of lspci and dmesg.
