I recently upgraded a woody box to sarge, carefully following the guidance in the release notes. Afterwards I found that although I can ssh into the server fine but am unable to ssh out to other hosts from this host - as a normal user. ssh from root still works fine but I'm unable to establish a connection from any of the user accounts. I have tried removing and adding entries in known_hosts but to no avail.
If there is no entry in known_hosts then I get this: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ssh -v -v -v xxxxxxxx.xxx.net OpenSSH_3.8.1p1 Debian-8.sarge.4, OpenSSL 0.9.7e 25 Oct 2004 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to xxxxxxxx.xxx.net [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /home/alistair/.ssh/identity type -1 debug1: identity file /home/alistair/.ssh/id_rsa type -1 debug1: identity file /home/alistair/.ssh/id_dsa type -1 debug1: Remote protocol version 1.99, remote software version OpenSSH_3.9p1 debug1: match: OpenSSH_3.9p1 pat OpenSSH* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_3.8.1p1 Debian-8.sarge.4 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha1,diffie-hellman-gro up1-sha1 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: ssh-rsa,ssh-dss debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: aes128-cbc,3des-cbc,blowfish-cbc,cast128-cbc,arcfour, aes192-cbc,aes256-cbc,[EMAIL PROTECTED],aes128-ctr,aes192-ctr,aes256-c tr debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: aes128-cbc,3des-cbc,blowfish-cbc,cast128-cbc,arcfour, aes192-cbc,aes256-cbc,[EMAIL PROTECTED],aes128-ctr,aes192-ctr,aes256-c tr debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: hmac-md5,hmac-sha1,hmac-ripemd160,[EMAIL PROTECTED] ssh.com,hmac-sha1-96,hmac-md5-96 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: hmac-md5,hmac-sha1,hmac-ripemd160,[EMAIL PROTECTED] ssh.com,hmac-sha1-96,hmac-md5-96 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: none,zlib debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: none,zlib debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: first_kex_follows 0 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: reserved 0 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha1,diffie-hellman-gro up14-sha1,diffie-hellman-group1-sha1 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: ssh-rsa,ssh-dss debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: aes128-cbc,3des-cbc,blowfish-cbc,cast128-cbc,arcfour, aes192-cbc,aes256-cbc,[EMAIL PROTECTED],aes128-ctr,aes192-ctr,aes256-c tr debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: aes128-cbc,3des-cbc,blowfish-cbc,cast128-cbc,arcfour, aes192-cbc,aes256-cbc,[EMAIL PROTECTED],aes128-ctr,aes192-ctr,aes256-c tr debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: hmac-md5,hmac-sha1,hmac-ripemd160,[EMAIL PROTECTED] ssh.com,hmac-sha1-96,hmac-md5-96 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: hmac-md5,hmac-sha1,hmac-ripemd160,[EMAIL PROTECTED] ssh.com,hmac-sha1-96,hmac-md5-96 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: none,zlib debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: none,zlib debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: first_kex_follows 0 debug2: kex_parse_kexinit: reserved 0 debug2: mac_init: found hmac-md5 debug1: kex: server->client aes128-cbc hmac-md5 none debug2: mac_init: found hmac-md5 debug1: kex: client->server aes128-cbc hmac-md5 none debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REQUEST(1024<1024<8192) sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_GROUP debug2: dh_gen_key: priv key bits set: 135/256 debug2: bits set: 498/1024 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_INIT sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REPLY debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /home/alistair/.ssh/known_hosts debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /home/alistair/.ssh/known_hosts debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /home/alistair/.ssh/known_hosts debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts debug2: no key of type 0 for host xxxxxx.xxx.net debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /home/alistair/.ssh/known_hosts2 debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts2 debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /home/alistair/.ssh/known_hosts debug3: check_host_in_hostfile: filename /etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts debug2: no key of type 2 for host xxxxxx.xxx.net Host key verification failed. And the entry from the auth.log file on the remote host: Jun 9 09:53:12 xxxxx sshd[18672]: Failed password for alistair from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx port 34801 ssh2 Jun 9 09:53:12 xxxxx last message repeated 2 times I have purged and re-installed the ssh package several times but this has made no impact. If anyone has any pointers or can suggest a more suitible list to post to then I would appreciate it. The host in question is a vserver running on x86 hardware. I have another vserver on the same host running sarge which doesn't have this issue but was running testing previously. Thanks for your time and sorry for the wrapped lines. -- Alistair Cockeram, Manchester UK "Everyone around me dies, Mr. Morden, except those who most deserve it." -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
