Things I might try: 1. A bootable-CD Linux, say Kanoppix or Gnoppix or Morphix.
2. Compiling a kernel that has NO APM or ACPI support. If this
doesn't lock up, it's strong circumstantial evidence that your
current kernel is the problem.
