Other problems with libc5.4.7

I have found three things broken using libc5.4.7 (before
I downgraded to 5.2.x!):

        gimp:           dies in attempting to call xlib.
        xpaint:         dies in attempting to call xlib.
        octave:         core dumps with a segmentation fault on
                        invocation.
