This is called: dpkg --get-selections [<pattern> ...] get list of selections to stdout dpkg --set-selections set package selections from stdin And would need a simple "read/write selection list file" menue with selection single list-files. This is how it is done in a lot of commercial applications. You can supply a few pre defined files like: minimal installation, www-server installation and so on. Users are able to add new lists with customized selections of packages. Perhaps an unselect feature is needed?
