Several people have suggested various ways to solve this. The correct
(and somewhat obscure) way to fix this is to upgrade to >= 2.1.14 or
go back down to 2.0.x or a stable 2.1.x. This is a bug in the kernel,
strangly enough, with the #! construct. It has been solved in 2.1.14
