This has nothing to do with the XF86COnfig file. Edit the /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers 
files. You'll find the following line:

        :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X

To be changed into:

        :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -bpp 16
