Believe it or not, this is a function of the fact that the DVDs are encrypted. I don't remember what the heck it is that you have to do to actually get enough of a handle on the data to be able to use something like DeCSS on it. I saw an interesting talk entitled "Decrypting DVD" at MIT a couple of years ago, and this is the first I've thought of it since then.
