No, all you have to do (if you're using lilo) is hold the shift at
boot and then type "linux single" at the prompt.  This will boot to
single user mode, then you can edit /etc/init.d/xdm to *not* start xdm
at boot.  Then you reboot (or just exit the single user shell), log in
and fix the problem with your X setup, and test it by running X
directly.

If everything's kosher, undo your changes to /etc/init.d/xdm, and run
/etc/init.d/xdm start.
