Andy- As far as I know this is normal for SCSI devices. The devices have to be on when you boot so the probe for devices recognizes what you have on the SCSI bus at boot time.
You may be able to turn if off after the probe until you need it (you'll have to check this) My SCSI tape drive is internal so I can't turn it off... but a friend of mine has an external tape and CDROM. All the devices you intend to use have to be on when you boot. Hope this helps, -Bernt On Mon, 24 Feb 1997 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 13:57:21 +0100 (MET) > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > To: Debian Mailing List <debian-user@lists.debian.org> > Subject: /dev/tape: No such device > > Hi! > > I've got a little problem with the scsi tape module (st.o): > > Everything is fine, when I turn on the streamer before the > computer and when I don't unload the driver manually (rmmod st). > > But if I turn on the streamer after the computer I get: > /dev/tape: No such device > whenever I try to access the tape (through /dev/tape as a link > to /dev/nst0 or 7dev/st0).
