Many thanks to all those from 3 lists who responded to this problem. What I wound up doing was to run "magicfilterconfig" as root and choose the "ljet2plo" filter provided for printers with low memory. Printing PS files from Netscape Mail, Netscape Browser or ghostview works fine now at 150 dpi. Some smaller fonts are a little ragged around the edges, but the printouts are clear and readable.
