I don't know about the standard in.pop3d daemon as I use qpopper but this daemon changes the real user ID to that of the user checking mail so I has no root priviledges. Also, it is important to have write access to /var/spool/mail. To have this this directory has to be set-gid mail: drwxrwsr-x 3 root mail 2048 Jun 12 23:21 mail/ You should check the permissions of /var/spool/mail/ben and make sure you are logging as ben when you telnet to port pop-3.
