I had the same trouble at first with my PS/2 mouse. The driver would load, but the mouse wouldn't work. I think all you need to do is tell X where the PS/2 port is. On my system, it was /dev/psaux. I selected the PS/2 mouse option during the X setup, and then specified that the port was /dev/mouse after doing "ln /dev/psaux /dev/mouse".
