How about using ssh? Since I switched to ssh I have not had any need to do those 'xauth extract - $DISPLAY | rsh otherhost xauth merge -' tricks anymore.
Ssh crypts the connection and as an extra bonus automagically sets DISPLAY and xauth authorization records during the login process. Ssh is in the non-US part of the distribution, see the README.non-US file in the ftp mirrors.
