Hmm, interesting thought. I'll try it.

No, it doesn't work. With this in XF86Config:
    FontPath "tcp/localhost:7100"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
and xfs not running, I get:

[all normal messages]
(**) FontPath set to "tcp/localhost:7100,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"

So, it turns out your suggestion doesn't work here.
